Prosecco sales bubble over as Champagne falls flat
Global sales of Prosecco have overtaken Champagne according to figures released by the OVSE - the Italian Wine Observatory. Prosecco outsold Champagne by 3 million bottles, selling 307 million bottles in 2013. Volume was up 11.5 per cent while by value, sales were up 16 per cent totalling €330 million (£274 million).
Sales of Prosecco have been on the rise in recent years, as it becomes the sparkling wine of choice for everyday celebrations in the UK and US.
Back in 2007, before the recession, sales of Champagne reached a record high of 339 million bottles but are now down to 304 million.
