Australian Prosecco banned in Singapore
The sale of Australian Prosecco has been banned in Singapore, with Singapore’s Court of Appeals ruling in favour of the Italian Prosecco Consortium.
Until 2009, Prosecco was known as a grape variety, with Italy and Australia both producing Sparkling Prosecco. However the rules were changed in the EU so that, in the EU, Prosecco is considered a region which could be protected under the EU’s Protected Geographical Indicators.
Since then, the Italian Prosecco Consortium has been using EU treaties and courts to have Australian Prosecco banned. Singapore is the latest country to impose a ban.
