Immigrant workers in Champagne region exploited

248 Polish immigrants have been found living in exploitative conditions in a house in the Marne region who were thought to be there in order to work the Champagne harvest. There is no evidence that any particular Champagne house directly hired these workers, but it is suspected an agency had recruited them to work the harvest this month. Over 100 workers were treated by the local Croix Rouge (Red Cross) while others were rehoused in a neighbouring commune or in lodgings provided by local winemakers. Others were sent home to Poland. A criminal investigation is underway.
