2000 year old liquid wine found in Spain

A liquid wine that is estimated to be over 2000 years has been found in Spain. While residue of older wines have been found before, this is the first time liquid wine of this age has been discovered.

The wine was found in the Ancient Roman necropolis of Carmo, now modern day Seville in Spain's Andalusia region. The wine was part of grave of goods accompanying the burial of a Roman man – and his cremated remains were plopped into the glass container before it was sealed. The wine, once a sweet white, is now stained a reddish colour, and contains human dust. Pouring wine onto the cremated remains of a loved one is a known funeral practice from ancient Roman times.

Wine residue has been found that is much older, but liquid wine is very rare. Until this discovery the oldest wine was the Speyer wine bottle found in Speyer in Germany and thought to be from 325 AD.
