Who had a turkey for Christmas wine sales?
There were winners and losers in the wine market this Christmas. Waitrose celebrated a 15.4% increase in Beer Wine and Spirit sales whilst Majestic described it as a difficult Christmas period with a 1.1% sales increase. Majestic said Christmas was challenging as there were high levels of competitive activity over the period. Waitrose reported a stellar Christmas week - apart from the traditional Christmas favourites it also saw an increase in Spanish and Austrian wines whilst English wines soared with a 193% increase. Sainsburys figures weren't released but they reported that their customers had traded up the quality of their wines over Christmas. As well as the usual increase in Champagne, Oddbins delivered some big sales in Bordeaux, North America and Germany.
