Vineyard vandals
Vines that produce the rare Liber Pater wine that can sell for up to €3,000 a bottle were destroyed by vandals last week. 500 vines of the little known grape variety Castets, were cut down to the root in a 2.5ha plot near Landiras in the Graves area. These vines were an historical treasure of Bordeaux according to the owner Loic Pasquet. They are certified organic and he uses horses and mules in the vineyard, in an attempt to recapture 19th century Bordeaux, at the time of the 1855 classification. Police are investigating but so far there have been no arrests.
