China continues crackdown on Australian wine with sales falling 98%
China’s crackdown on Australian wine exports has been heavy handed and dramatic with sales falling of a cliff edge. Down 98% from US$158 million in October 2020 to just US$4 million in December.
On 28 November 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce officially announced that it would charge a fee ranging from 107.1% to 212.1% for related imported wines originating in Australia.
Wine Australia CEO, Andreas Clark, said that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, exports hit a record year-on-year value of $3.1bn in the 12 months ended October 2020, before recording a steep decline in the final two months of the calendar year.
